Steps to creating a peer AMP network
Introduction
The AMP network consists of two different machines. One is a data collector which collects data from all of the measurement boxes. It also does analysis of the data and makes that available via a web page. The other machines (called amplets) are the measurement machines which are sent to each location of interest. These machines only conduct the measurements. They are not used for any other tasks as that might cause the measurements to be inaccurate. It is important to keep your hardware consistent over the various amplets as well. This documentation is to help you create your own peer network. There is currently no support for this, so you are on your own.
Basic Steps
- Read the documentation and decide on your AMPlet hardware, also decide on how much disk space you want for your data collector and wether you want to have a redundant one.
- Setup the data collector using the documentation provided and the tar files
- Setup an AMPlet using the documentation provided and the tar files.
- Make a copy of the amplet to another amplet and see if it runs and collects measurements. The analysis should be going as well. After this you can designate one of the disks master and the other backup. You can then make copies from them as you ship the amplets to different locations. Be sure that you don't use your master disk in a production system.
Peering with other AMP meshes
Once your network is running and collecting interesting data, it is time to contact us regarding peering your network with our network. There are many different steps involved in that and we would appreciate your ideas. For an example of a peering agreement, see: DREN Peering Agreement
Naming Conventions
Normally, people who develop a mesh of amp measurement machines give their network names that look similar to "DREN AMP", where DREN is their project and the AMP acknowledges that it is built upon the principles of the AMP project using their software. It is also important that you acknowledge the project by giving credit where ever possible to the National Science Foundation Cooperative Agreement No. ANI-9807479, and the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research.

Technical Support
There is currently no facility for technical support and as such these distributions are currently unsupported. However, we have setup a mailing list that users can subscribe to. In order to do that, you should send an email to listserv@ucsd.edu with a blank Subject line, and with the body text of 'add youraddress ampdist-l'. To unsubscribe, you would do the same thing but the body text would be 'delete youraddress ampdist-l'. Once subscribed you can send email to ampdist@nlanr.net and it will go to everyone on the list. We will attempt to answer all of the questions that are posted to the list but we may not be able to due to time constraints.
